Mimic
Medium Monstrosity (shapechanger), neutral
450 XP
Special Abilities
Shapechanger
The mimic can use its action to polymorph into an object or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
Adhesive (Object Form Only)
The mimic adheres to anything that touches it. A Huge or smaller creature adhered to the mimic is also grappled by it (escape DC 13). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have disadvantage.
False Appearance (Object Form Only)
While the mimic remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from an ordinary object.
Grappler
The mimic has advantage on attack rolls against any creature grappled by it.

Quick Reference
Running This Encounter
Mimics are deceptive ambush predators that should surprise the party by disguising themselves as common dungeon objects like chests, doors, or barrels. Reveal the mimic only when players interact with or attempt to take the disguised object, creating a memorable shock moment. Use the surprise round to your advantage, allowing the mimic to attack before initiative if the party wasn't suspicious. Consider placing multiple mimics in the same location to amplify the paranoia and uncertainty.
Combat Tactics
Mimics rely on their sticky adhesive to grapple and restrain prey, so they should grab targets and attempt to drag them closer or immobilize them while using their bite attack. Once combat begins, the mimic should focus fire on isolated party members or those who deal low damage, avoiding heavy hitters when possible. If reduced to half health, a clever mimic may attempt to flee or drop its disguise to pursue a different target.
Environment & Setting
Mimics thrive in dungeons, crypts, and abandoned buildings where adventurers expect to find treasure chests, doors, and other furnishings. Place them in treasure rooms, locked chambers, or along common corridors where players naturally interact with objects.
