When the mephit dies, it explodes in a cloud of steam. Each creature within 5 ft. of the mephit must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw or take 4 (1d8) fire damage.

Variant: Summon Mephits (1/Day)

The mephit has a 25 percent chance of summoning 1d4 mephits of its kind. A summoned mephit appears in an unoccupied space within 60 feet of its summoner, acts as an ally of its summoner, and can't summon other mephits. It remains for 1 minute, until it or its summoner dies, or until its summoner dismisses it as an action.

Running This Encounter

Steam Mephits are chaotic, irritable creatures that attack immediately when threatened. Use their low AC and hit points to create fast, aggressive encounters that emphasize their unpredictable nature. They work well in groups of 3-4 to pose a real threat, or as minions serving a larger elemental entity. Have them use their environment to scatter and regroup rather than fight in organized formations.

Combat Tactics

Steam Mephits prioritize their Steam Breath attack (15-foot cone, DEX save DC 12) on clustered enemies before closing in with claws. They are cowardly and will flee if reduced below half health, especially if separated from allies. Use their evasive tactics and small size to dart around obstacles and force the party to spread out.

Environment & Setting

Steam Mephits thrive near hot springs, geysers, volcanic vents, or inside clockwork facilities with active boilers. Position encounters in terrain with steam clouds for visual cover, allowing mephits to hide and ambush while maintaining thematic atmosphere.
