Counterspell

Abjuration
Level: 3rd-level
Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take when you see a creature within 60 feet of you casting a spell
Range: 60 feet
Duration: Instantaneous
Components: S

You attempt to interrupt a creature in the process of casting a spell. If the creature is casting a spell of 3rd level or lower, its spell fails and has no effect. If it is casting a spell of 4th level or higher, make an ability check using your spellcasting ability. The DC equals 10 + the spell's level. On a success, the creature's spell fails and has no effect.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the interrupted spell has no effect if its level is less than or equal to the level of the spell slot you used.

Player Guide

Cast Counterspell as a reaction when an enemy caster begins casting within 60 feet, forcing them to make an ability check if they're casting 4th level or higher. Position your spellcaster where they can see enemies, use initiative to predict enemy spell timing, and coordinate with allies to focus fire on casters who waste resources on failed spells. The spell's reaction-based nature makes it perfect for turning the tide when enemies use powerful abilities, making it invaluable in any party with a wizard, sorcerer, or cleric.

DM Tips

Counterspell can dramatically slow combat if overused by PCs; consider enemy casters that use non-spell abilities or have legendary actions to counter-counter it. Allow clever players to fake-cast spells to bait out Counterspells, creating tactical mind-games between casters.
