Stone Shape

Transmutation
Level: 4th-level
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Duration: Instantaneous
Components: V, S, M
Materials: Soft clay, to be crudely worked into the desired shape for the stone object.

You touch a stone object of Medium size or smaller or a section of stone no more than 5 feet in any dimension and form it into any shape that suits your purpose. So, for example, you could shape a large rock into a weapon, idol, or coffer, or make a small passage through a wall, as long as the wall is less than 5 feet thick. You could also shape a stone door or its frame to seal the door shut. The object you create can have up to two hinges and a latch, but finer mechanical detail isn't possible.

Player Guide

Stone Shape excels at solving environmental puzzles and creating tactical advantages before combat begins: carve handholds into cliffs, seal doorways, or create defensive barriers. During combat, use it to block line of sight, create cover, or manipulate terrain to your advantage—though its casting time means it's best prepared proactively. The spell's true value lies in creative problem-solving outside initiative; coordinate with your party to enable otherwise impossible solutions.

DM Tips

Adjudicate creatively but fairly—Stone Shape can trivialize obstacles, so establish what constitutes a reasonable shaped outcome (stairs: yes; intricate locks: no). Allow clever applications like creating drainage channels or structural weaknesses, but maintain challenge balance.
