D&D 5e Races: Power Rankings & Class Pairings

Race selection in D&D 5e shapes everything from ability scores to special features to roleplay. With Tasha's optional rules letting you put racial ability bonuses anywhere, the meta has shifted toward racial features (special abilities) over stat bonuses. This guide ranks the major SRD races and explains the strongest class pairings for each.

S Tier Races

Variant Human

The most flexible race in the game. Two stat increases, an extra skill, and a feat at level 1. Pairs with: any class, but particularly fighters, paladins, and rogues benefiting from level-1 feats.

Half-Elf

+2 CHA, +1 to two other stats, two extra skills, advantage on charm saves. The skill bonuses make half-elves ideal party faces. Pairs with: Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Paladin.

A Tier Races

Hill Dwarf

+2 CON, +1 WIS, +1 HP per level (Dwarven Toughness), poison resistance, weapon training, stonecunning. Pairs with: Cleric, Wizard, Paladin.

Mountain Dwarf

+2 STR, +2 CON, medium armor proficiency. The double stat boost makes mountain dwarves the strongest STR-based melee race. Pairs with: Fighter, Paladin, Barbarian, Cleric.

Wood Elf

+2 DEX, +1 WIS, 35-foot speed, weapon training, mask of the wild. The 35-foot speed is one of the strongest passive abilities in the game. Pairs with: Ranger, Druid, Rogue, Monk.

High Elf

+2 DEX, +1 INT, weapon training, an extra cantrip from the wizard list. Pairs with: Wizard, any martial wanting cantrip access.

Half-Orc

+2 STR, +1 CON, Relentless Endurance (drop to 1 HP instead of 0 once per long rest), Savage Attacks (extra damage die on melee crits). Pairs with: Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin.

Tiefling

+2 CHA, +1 INT, fire resistance, Hellish Rebuke once per long rest, Darkness at level 5. Pairs with: Warlock, Sorcerer, Bard, Paladin.

B Tier Races

Drow (Dark Elf)

+2 DEX, +1 CHA, superior darkvision (120 ft), drow magic. The major drawback is Sunlight Sensitivity. Pairs with: any underdark or night-themed campaign.

Halfling (Lightfoot)

+2 DEX, +1 CHA, Lucky (reroll natural 1s), Brave, Halfling Nimbleness. Lucky alone is one of the strongest racial features in the game. Pairs with: Rogue, Ranger, Bard.

Halfling (Stout)

Same as Lightfoot but with +1 CON instead of +1 CHA, plus poison resistance. Pairs with: Rogue, Fighter, Ranger.

Dragonborn

+2 STR, +1 CHA, breath weapon, damage resistance based on heritage. Pairs with: Paladin, Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline), Fighter.

C Tier Races

Gnome (Forest)

+2 INT, +1 DEX, Gnome Cunning (advantage on INT/WIS/CHA saves vs magic), speak with small beasts, Minor Illusion cantrip. The 25-foot speed hurts. Pairs with: Wizard, Sorcerer.

Gnome (Rock)

+2 INT, +1 CON, Gnome Cunning, Artificer's Lore, Tinker. Pairs with: Artificer (when allowed), Wizard.

Use Tasha's Flexible Stats

Tasha's Cauldron of Everything introduced an optional rule: ignore racial ability score bonuses and place +2/+1 wherever you want. Most groups now allow this by default. Under flexible stats, race becomes about features (not stat bonuses), which means picking the race you find narratively interesting matters more than min-maxing.

Even with Tasha's rules, some races still outperform: Variant Human's level-1 feat, Wood Elf's 35 ft speed, Hill Dwarf's bonus HP — these features outweigh stat allocation almost everywhere.
