Bulette
Large Monstrosity, unaligned
1,800 XP
Special Abilities
Standing Leap
The bulette's long jump is up to 30 ft. and its high jump is up to 15 ft., with or without a running start.
Actions
Bite
Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 30 (4d12 + 4) piercing damage.
Deadly Leap
If the bulette jumps at least 15 ft. as part of its movement, it can then use this action to land on its ft. in a space that contains one or more other creatures. Each of those creatures must succeed on a DC 16 Strength or Dexterity saving throw (target's choice) or be knocked prone and take 14 (3d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage plus 14 (3d6 + 4) slashing damage. On a successful save, the creature takes only half the damage, isn't knocked prone, and is pushed 5 ft. out of the bulette's space into an unoccupied space of the creature's choice. If no unoccupied space is within range, the creature instead falls prone in the bulette's space.
Quick Reference
Running This Encounter
The bulette is a devastating ambush predator that should burst from underground to catch the party off-guard, preferably when they're traveling or distracted. Use the surprise round to deal massive damage with its bite and multiattack, forcing the party to react defensively. Remember it can burrow 40 ft per round, allowing it to reposition, circle, or escape if bloodied. Control the pacing with tactical retreats underground, resurfacing to attack then diving back down to reset positioning.
Combat Tactics
The bulette leads with a devastating charge attack using its bite, targeting the most lightly armored character or backline support. It uses its legendary actions and high mobility to maintain pressure, burrowing away after dealing damage to avoid concentrated fire, then resurging to attack again. If badly wounded below 25 HP, it may attempt to flee rather than fight to the death.
Environment & Setting
Sandy deserts, badlands, or soft grasslands where burrowing is possible—avoid heavily fortified locations or solid stone. Underground cavern systems with loose earth also work, allowing the bulette to control vertical space and escape routes.
