Running This Encounter

Giant Eagles are proud aerial hunters that typically avoid direct confrontation with humanoids unless defending their nest or young. Use their mobility and ranged attacks (talons and beak) to control the battlefield by attacking from above, forcing the party to use ranged options or climb. They are intelligent enough to retreat if bloodied and may circle back for another pass. Consider environmental hazards like cliff faces or difficult terrain below that creates tactical complexity.

Combat Tactics

Giant Eagles favor aerial hit-and-run attacks, using their talons for melee when at advantage and flying away before enemies can retaliate effectively. They will target the weakest or most isolated party member and attempt to grab and lift them away from allies using their talons. If wounded significantly or protecting eggs/young, they become aggressive and more willing to commit to sustained combat.

Environment & Setting

Mountain peaks, high cliff faces, and canyon walls provide ideal terrain for Giant Eagles to leverage their flying speed and aerial advantage. Encounters are most atmospheric near their eyries or nesting grounds where they have home-field advantage.
