Actions
Tentacles
Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 10). Until this grapple ends, the octopus can't use its tentacles on another target.
Ink Cloud (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest)
A 5-foot-radius cloud of ink extends all around the octopus if it is underwater. The area is heavily obscured for 1 minute, although a significant current can disperse the ink. After releasing the ink, the octopus can use the Dash action as a bonus action.
Quick Reference
Running This Encounter
Octopuses are best used as environmental hazards or minions rather than serious threats, ideal for low-level parties or as comedic encounters. Their intelligence and ability to squeeze through tight spaces make them interesting for exploration-based encounters in underwater or coastal settings. Consider using them to complicate a dungeon by blocking passages, ambushing from hiding spots, or creating tense moments despite their low damage output. Their low HP means they can be defeated quickly, but their evasive tactics reward creative player problem-solving.
Combat Tactics
Octopuses rely on their high speed in water and Stealth ability to approach unsuspecting prey, attempting to grab targets with their tentacles and drag them into deeper water. They prioritize escaping rather than fighting to the death, using their 30 ft. swim speed and ability to squeeze through gaps to create distance. A cornered octopus will attempt one grab attack before fleeing, avoiding confrontation with dangerous opponents.
Environment & Setting
Octopuses thrive in coastal areas, caves with water, shipwrecks, and underwater dungeons where they can hide among rocks, kelp, or debris. Encounters work best in environments with both water and confined spaces, allowing the creature to use its Squeeze trait tactically.
