Running This Encounter

The Plesiosaurus is a powerful aquatic predator that relies on its superior swimming speed (40 ft.) to control positioning and separate party members. Use the environment to break line of sight and force melee-focused characters to chase it through water. The creature should use its mobility to stay away from ranged attackers while closing on isolated targets, and don't underestimate the damage output of its bite (3d6+3) combined with multiattack.

Combat Tactics

The Plesiosaurus uses hit-and-run tactics, diving away after landing a bite and repositioning for another attack. It will attempt to drag grappled targets underwater if they fail the contested Strength check, but should retreat if reduced below 20 HP or if it becomes cornered with no escape route.

Environment & Setting

Large bodies of water such as lakes, coastal regions, or underground seas where the Plesiosaurus can use depth and distance to its advantage. Shallow water (less than 20 ft. deep) reduces its tactical superiority.
