Quick Reference
Running This Encounter
Bugbears are ambush predators that excel at surprise attacks and overwhelming foes quickly. Use their high damage output (2d8+3 greataxe) to threaten squishier party members immediately. Position them in shadows or behind cover to maximize their surprise round advantage. Have them retreat if reduced to half health, as they prefer hit-and-run tactics over prolonged fights.
Combat Tactics
Bugbears should attack the lowest AC or most vulnerable target first, using their Multiattack action (one greataxe and one bite) to deal massive damage. They'll focus fire to eliminate threats quickly rather than spreading damage, then disengage and reposition if outnumbered. If cornered, they'll fight to the death with savage ferocity.
Environment & Setting
Dense forests, goblin strongholds, cave networks, or dungeon corridors with shadowy alcoves are ideal for bugbear encounters. These environments allow them to use their Brute ability effectively and capitalize on surprise tactics.
