Thunderwave

Evocation
Level: 1st-level
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self
Duration: Instantaneous
Components: V, S

A wave of thunderous force sweeps out from you. Each creature in a 15-foot cube originating from you must make a constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d8 thunder damage and is pushed 10 feet away from you. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and isn't pushed. In addition, unsecured objects that are completely within the area of effect are automatically pushed 10 feet away from you by the spell's effect, and the spell emits a thunderous boom audible out to 300 feet.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 1st.

Player Guide

Position yourself at the edge of enemy clusters to maximize hit count while minimizing friendly fire risk. Use the 15-foot knockback to separate enemies, disrupt formations, or push foes into hazards like cliffs, fire, or allied control spells. The spell's area extends from your position in any direction, so creative positioning on varied terrain dramatically increases tactical value. Combine with spells that restrict movement or benefit from spacing to amplify effectiveness.

DM Tips

Clearly indicate the 15-foot cube's origin and direction before rolling saves; the knockback is mandatory even on successful saves in some tables—verify your rule interpretation. Use terrain to create interesting consequences: knockback into water, off ledges, or through difficult terrain amplifies the spell's value beyond raw damage.
