Running This Encounter

A Frost Giant is a devastating melee combatant that uses its massive reach (15 ft. with greataxe) to control battlefield space. Leverage the giant's high HP (138) by placing it in terrain with cover or elevation advantage to make ranged attacks more difficult. Use its rock-throwing ability (60 ft. range) to soften the party before melee engagement. Don't be afraid to use the giant's Intelligence (9) to make tactical decisions like targeting spellcasters or retreating to regenerate in icy terrain.

Combat Tactics

The Frost Giant opens combat by hurling rocks at range, then charges into melee to use its powerful greataxe attacks (advantage on attacks against prone enemies). It will attempt to grapple and throw smaller enemies, positioning them away from cover or off cliffs when possible. The giant uses its cold resistance to stand in hazardous ice terrain and will attempt to isolate weaker party members.

Environment & Setting

Arctic wastelands, snow-covered mountain peaks, or ice caverns work best, allowing the giant to use the terrain for cover and retreat. Ideally include crevasses, frozen lakes, or icy slopes where thrown rocks and grappled enemies become more dangerous.
