Running This Encounter

The Half-Red Dragon Veteran is a seasoned warrior enhanced by draconic heritage, making them a formidable solo threat or lieutenant under a dragon commander. Position them in defensible terrain where their flight can be leveraged, and use their Multiattack to pressure the party's front line. Consider adding 2-4 cultists or soldiers as minions to extend the encounter's duration and create tactical complexity. Their Draconic Resistance makes them especially dangerous against fire-wielding casters.

Combat Tactics

The veteran uses their flight to maintain distance while raining fire breath on clustered enemies, forcing the party to split focus between ranged and melee threats. They prioritize attacking spellcasters with their longsword and shield when grounded, using hit-and-run tactics to whittle down the party. If reduced below 20 HP, they attempt to flee rather than fight to the death.

Environment & Setting

Mountain peaks, dragon lairs, or fortified military camps work best, allowing the veteran to exploit elevation and use natural barriers for cover. Underground caverns or dungeons with high ceilings also suit their flight capabilities.
